A New Message

England, 1775

The journey from London to Plymouth was scheduled to take three days, assuming they didn't run into the likes of Gentleman Jim or his ilk. Bart had never traveled in a stagecoach before. He had always been in the driver’s seat, sitting outside, sometimes enjoying a sunny day, but mostly wet and cold as a delivery man for Lester and Pack.

He thought back to his trip last week to Marshalsea Prison. The wardens were so used to his visits, bringing food for his father, that they usually just waved him through, but today was different. They kept him waiting outside the main gate. His feet were cold, feeling as if they were wet. He stamped them in the mud, hunching his shoulders against the frigid, damp morning.

Bart had that creepy feeling that all was not well. A fog blanketed the prison, so thick he couldn't see the guards’ tower on the far side of the imposing structure. He didn't have long to wait, hearing the inner door screeching as it was pushed open. He turned to look, expecting a warden to grant him access.

Instead, he faced a man he had never seen before, an evil smirk on his unshaven face, his hair hanging in disarray and his clothes so stained and torn, Bart didn't know whether he was a warden or an inmate. The man carried a small bundle of rags, tied together by an old hemp rope. As he approached, he threw the bundle at Bart's feet and favored Bart with the most uncaring snarl Bart had ever seen.

"Inmate Entwhistle Number 40679 is dead. This 'ere is his stuff." With that short announcement, he turned and walked back inside.

Bart was stunned. It took him a moment to gather his wits.

"You bloody –” Words failed him as he tried to reign in his language. “That was my Da! You killed him!"

He shouted at the top of his lungs at the receding figure. The warden didn't turn around or waiver his pace. The fog enveloped him, and soon Bart was alone again. He picked up the bundle, untied the tag, and with the sleeve of his arm, wiped some moisture from his eyes so he could survey the contents. There was nothing, just soiled rags. No note, no memories.

Bart let the rags drop to the muddy ground and stomped on them in anger. Then he breathed deeply, his face grimacing as he noticed the pungent odor of human waste for the first time. It rose from the River Thames less than 50 feet away.

Bart was not a man prone to rebellious behavior. He had always been content with his lot in life. But now he felt a rising rage, an intense frustration with the unfairness of it all, of how his father had been treated. He started breathing deeply, pushing the oxygen into his lungs, as if readying himself for a marathon.

"I won't forget you, Da, I swear I won't. I'm going to make my way to the Americas.
